Northern Lights
Northern Lights is a bit of a workout to drive along for 6 or 8 minutes and then gradually let the air of the balloon as the song finally flickers out. This take captures the thought nicely.
I will record a new performance of this song in 2023, I definitely would like to revisit this piece, it is a lot of fun to play…
This version was recorded in 1986 or 87 on my 1981 Taylor 555 12 string using a Shure SM57 and a $100 Sony condensor microphone on my old reel to reel. This set up punched above its weight here.
Techy note, such as it was in 1987:
The echo reflects a feedback loop created by taking the tape deck output and feeding back into a second set of inputs on back of deck – pure analog tape delay ala an EchoPlex for those into antique sound processing.
The take featured here crackles from end to end until the Northern Lights flicker into the darkness.
Happy New Year!!!
