Breezing Up

Breezing Up

I remember my parents having a print of Winslow Homer’s Breezing Up (a Fair Wind) above the mantle in the house we lived in back in Houston, TX, when I was maybe 9 years old, and it stuck in my mind for many years. I later discovered his oceanic paintings of the New England coast and the Bahamas, and they have always had a certain resonance for me.

Breezing Up is an extended exercise for the 12 string, towards the end of this take I was busting a gut to try to get the sound of 3 guitars in one pass of the recorder.

The paintings featured in the video (link below) are all Winslow Homer’s work. I reconnected with all of this when I lived in Machias, ME and was able to visit Quoddy Head, Great Wass Island and the beaches at Addison, ME nearby where I lived in Indian River.
